ReStore Volunteer Opportunities

Habitat for Humanity Niagara ReStores are a social enterprise that accept and resell donations of new and used furniture, appliances, décor, and home improvement building materials. All proceeds from operations fund Habitat for Humanity Niagara and help build homes in the community for those in need of a safe place to call home. Minimum age of 15 years old is required for all ReStore roles. Volunteer opportunities are available Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Merchandising and customer service

As a merchandising and customer service volunteer, you’ll be interacting with customers and help us organize, display and sell donated goods to directly support our mission.

Donation centre specialist

As a donation centre specialist, you’ll put your skills to use volunteering in our warehouse assisting with preparing donated items for resale including product testing, cleaning and repairing.

Donation centre attendant

As a donation centre attendant, you’ll assist ReStore staff with accepting donated items from the public and preparing the items for sale including sorting, re-assembly, repairing, pricing and display. You’ll also accept electronic waste and items for recycling. If you enjoy physical work or like to clean or sort items, this is an opportunity for you. Some heavy lifting may be required with this role.

Cleaning and maintenance

A clean, organized store is very important to help sell products and for customer safety. As a cleaning and maintenance volunteer, you’ll ensure that the ReStore is clean and safe for everyone by dusting and wiping down surfaces, sweeping, mopping and tidying areas of the store as well as tending to garbage and recycling. 

Truck helper

As a ReStore truck helper, you’ll go out on the truck with our staff truck driver to pick up donations throughout the community as well as interact with donors. Heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.) is required with this role.

Build Site

Our construction volunteers are integral to our goals of building more homes and better neighbourhoods and communities throughout Niagara. They help fill the gaps before and in-between our Habitat build days, assisting our construction manager to keep the construction of the home on schedule. They also host our build days to engage with participants and help ensure a great experience. 

Build sites are throughout the Niagara region and only during limited times of the year. Volunteer opportunities are available from Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with shift lengths depending on the role, construction schedule and build day needs.

Construction crew

As a construction crew volunteer, you’ll have some experience in flooring, trim, framing, painting and minor repairs to help build Habitat homes. A minimum age of 16 is required.

Crew lead

As a crew lead, you’ll work with the construction manager, volunteers and Habitat families to build homes and engage the community. You’ll teach and lead small groups of Habitat build day participants in a wide variety of construction tasks. A minimum age of 18 is required. 

Site host

As a site host, you’ll be on the build site and responsible for registering the Habitat build day participants, taking photos and ensuring participants are enjoying their experience. Minimum age of 18 is required. Volunteer opportunities are available during our Habitat build days from Monday to Friday, and shifts are from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. 

Kitchen Salvage

As a salvage crew volunteer, you will help remove kitchens, bathrooms, doors, windows and other sellable items from homes that are being renovated. These items are then brought to the ReStore for resale. Home renovation experience is an asset, but not required. Must be available on weekday mornings. Minimum age of 16 years old is required and an ability to lift
up to 50 lbs.

Administration

Habitat Niagara often needs volunteers who are willing to assist with administrative tasks in our office, such as helping with mailings, database updates and other organizational support. As an administration volunteer, you may be required to help with regular office tasks, small ongoing projects, data entry and filing, and other administrative support as needed. Volunteers must be a minimum of 15 years old. Volunteer opportunities are available from Monday to Friday, with shifts varying in length between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. 

 

Special Events

From time to time, Habitat for Humanity Niagara hosts special events or is the recipient of a third-party fundraiser. As a special events volunteer, you may be required to help with various tasks such as registration, food service, set up and tear down, selling raffle tickets, etc. Volunteers must be a minimum of 15 years old. Events take place various days and times.

Habitat for Humanity Niagara’s Board of Directors are the fiduciaries who steer our organization towards a sustainable future, as well as ensure Habitat Niagara has adequate resources to advance its mission.

Your safety is a priority at Habitat Niagara, and all volunteers receive online and in-person safety training. We welcome volunteers aged 15+ for our ReStore and special event roles, and 16+ for our construction and salvage crews. CSA certified (green triangle patch) safety footwear is required for most roles. Ask us about loaner pairs if you need to borrow some of ours!
