There are many ways to support Habitat for Humanity Niagara’s mission to bring our community together to help families build strength, stability and independence through safe and affordable homeownership, including joining our volunteer crew.

How do I join the Habitat for Humanity Niagara volunteer crew?

What roles are available?

We have several opportunities for all skill levels that directly support our mission, including:

  • Assisting customers in any of our three Habitat ReStores
  • Receiving donations at our ReStores
  • Removing donated kitchens to be sold in our ReStores
  • Joining our construction crew building Habitat homes
  • Supporting events and administrative projects

Can I choose my own volunteer role, or do you assign them?

We’ll work together to match your interests, skills and experience to the perfect volunteer role for you. The availability of certain roles and locations may vary throughout the year, depending on factors such as our build schedule and volunteer levels.

What skills are required to volunteer? Do you provide training?

We welcome volunteers with all skill levels and abilities. You’ll receive online safety and Habitat 101 training prior to starting, as well as on your first day. Additional skills-based training is also provided depending on your role, such as customer service, truck hand signal safety and use of tools.

What is the minimum age to volunteer?

Your safety is our priority at Habitat Niagara. For this reason, our minimum age is 15 for all ReStore and administrative roles. Construction and kitchen salvage crew members must be 16 and older, or 18 for crew leads and site hosts.

What should I wear?

Most of our volunteer roles require CSA approved safety footwear. Ask us about loaner pairs if you don’t have access to a pair. Please dress casually and comfortably. A volunteer apron or t-shirt will be provided, depending on the role.

What are the volunteer shifts, and can I set my own schedule?

The shifts will depend on your volunteer role and your availability. We value your time and take a flexible approach as much as possible when it comes to scheduling shifts.

The ReStores are open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and our build program operates Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (subject to the construction schedule). The salvage crew also operates Monday to Friday, starting at 9:00 am and finishing by approximately 1:00 pm. Administrative and special event roles will vary depending on the project needs.

Are there time commitments for volunteering?

We value your safety and want to provide an enriching experience with us, so all volunteers receive extensive training at Habitat Niagara. We usually ask volunteers to commit to at least three months with us, or forty volunteer hours. This can be discussed when you start the onboarding process.

Do you accept students for community service hours and co-op positions?

Definitely! We love providing educational opportunities for students. We usually ask those completing community service hours as a graduation requirement to complete their full forty hours with us. Co-op placements can be requested through a co-op teacher or placement coordinator at post-secondary institutions. For more details, please email Manager, Volunteer Recruitment and Engagement.


How can groups get involved?

Habitat Niagara’s build day program is a one-of-a-kind employee engagement opportunity that offers your company a chance to invest in your employees while making a difference in the lives of local families and the communities in which they live. How can I get involved with Habitat builds internationally?

The Habitat for Humanity Canada Global Village program lets you travel abroad while building a home for a family in need of safe, decent and affordable housing. Trips are scheduled throughout the year to countries like Kenya, India, Thailand, Romania, El Salvador and Costa Rica. Find out more on the Global Village website.

What if I can’t join the volunteer crew but I still want to help Habitat Niagara?

There are many ways to support our mission and help families build strength, stability and independence through safe and affordable homeownership. 

You can make a donation, shop at one of our three ReStores , donate your kitchen, appliances or bathroom the next time you renovate, encourage your employer to book a build day (link to help us build page), support one of our fundraising events  and tell your friends about our volunteer opportunities
