The Meaning of Home Writing Contest Returns for Its 19th Year!

We’re thrilled to share some exciting news: the Meaning of Home writing contest is back for its 19th year, launching on January 5, 2026!

This beloved contest invites students in grades 4, 5, and 6 to reflect on what home truly means to them by submitting a heartfelt poem or essay. It’s more than just a writing challenge—it’s a chance for young voices to shine while supporting Habitat for Humanity and the mission of safe, affordable housing

Why Participate?

The Meaning of Home contest is a unique opportunity for students to:

  • Explore their creativity through writing.
  • Share personal reflections on the importance of home.
  • Make a real impact in their communities.

Every submission helps build brighter futures:

  •  $10 donation to your local Habitat for Humanity for every student entry.
  •  Three grand prize winners will each secure a $30,000 grant for their local Habitat.
  •  Nine runners-up will each earn a $10,000 grant.
  •  Plus, students and classrooms receive individual prizes for their participation

Teacher Toolkit: Supporting Classroom Creativity

To make participation easy and meaningful, we’ve developed a free teacher toolkit packed with lesson plans and activities that align with Language Arts curriculum goals. Teachers can guide students through:

  • Crafting original, thoughtful writing
  • Organizing ideas for a specific audience and purpose
  • Expressing personal opinions with confidence
  • Using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Developing editing and revision skills

This toolkit ensures the contest isn’t just fun—it’s a real-world learning opportunity that strengthens essential skills while inspiring students to think deeply about the meaning of home.

A Contest That Builds More Than Homes

The Meaning of Home contest is more than words on a page. It’s about empowering students to use their voices, fostering creativity, and making a lasting difference in their communities. Each entry contributes to Habitat’s mission of building safe, affordable housing—and that’s something worth celebrating.
