How to recycle your old furniture

Give your old furniture a new life!

Millions of household items end up in our landfills every year, and by recycling these items we can decrease that number and help to create a more sustainable future. We already know the importance of recycling paper, plastic, metal and glass but did you know that you can recycle your old furniture instead of sending it to the landfill?

Here are several ways you can recycle old furniture instead of kicking it to the curb for the garbage truck to pick up:

  1. Donate it. There are many charities, such as our Habitat for Humanity ReStores, who accept gently used furniture. If you can’t deliver it to us, contact us to pick it up from you for FREE – and you may qualify for a tax receipt. Plus, you’ll help to fund our mission when it sells at our ReStore by supporting our homebuilding program. #winwin
  2. Sell it. There are many free online services where you can post a photo, description and price of the item you are selling such as Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace. Just make sure you keep your safety top of mind when conducting online sales
  3. Refurbish it. Before you decide to get rid of it, consider giving it a new look. Use your imagination and reupholster it by a professional or DIY, or get creative with chalk paint
  4. Repurpose it.
  • Travel trunks can be made into coffee tables or side tables.
  • Old wood ladders are perfect for hanging towels or blankets.
  • Turn a dresser into a bookshelf, entry table or bathroom vanity.
  1. Recycle it. If your furniture is not in good condition to do any of the above you can recycle the material of the furniture itself. If it’s made of metal, take it to one of our ReStores for free metal recycling.
