Steps to becoming a Habitat homeowner
At Habitat for Humanity Niagara, we help families unlock the benefits of owning a home by making mortgage payments affordable. Our homeownership program is designed to support Niagara families who are ready for the responsibilities of owning a home but may not qualify for a traditional mortgage. Becoming a Habitat homeowner is a journey that involves commitment, partnership and a willingness to build a better future.
The following steps outline the path to homeownership through Habitat for Humanity Niagara.

Step 1
Complete the Eligibility Questionnaire
Interested families are encouraged to fill out our Eligibility Questionnaire.

Step 2
Await response
Respondents who meet the basic eligibility criteria will receive an email invitation to attend an information session. Our information sessions are held virtually, giving you the flexibility to participate at a date and time that’s suitable for you.

Step 3
Attend an information session
This will cover important details about Habitat for Humanity Niagara’s Homeownership Program, the mortgage model and current build locations. The session takes approximately 1 hour with a question period at the end.

Step 4
Complete the full application
After the information session, you will receive an email with a link to the online application. If you believe you meet all the criteria to become a Habitat homeowner please complete the full application.

Step 5
Pre-approval process
Once we receive your application and supporting documents, we will formally review your financial details, including a credit check to determine your ability to pay an affordable mortgage.

Step 6
Interview Period
Applicants whom we move forward with will be invited for two different interviews, one interview will take place where you are currently living. Your references may also be contacted at this time.

Step 7
Approval Process
A conditional approval will be offered to the qualified family. Once all documents are signed, their volunteer hours begin including attending homeowner education workshops.

Step 8
Move-in
Once the construction of the home is complete and the family has completed their 500 volunteer hours, the house will be assessed at fair market value to determine the selling price and subsequent mortgage payments. We will also schedule a predelivery inspection (PDI) and a move-in date.
