NIAGARA, ON – Habitat for Humanity Niagara is building six new townhouses at Plymouth Road and First Street in Welland and is seeking six local families ready to embrace the responsibilities and rewards of owning a home.
“Affordable homeownership through Habitat Niagara simply wouldn’t be possible without the incredible generosity of our business community and supporters,” said Mark Carl, Habitat for Humanity Niagara CEO. “It’s thanks to those who build, donate, shop at our ReStores, volunteer and champion our mission that we can help families achieve the stability of an affordable place to live and raise a family. We’re excited to continue working alongside our community to make these homes a reality.”
Habitat’s Affordable Homeownership Program helps families struggling with unsafe, overcrowded, inaccessible or unaffordable housing. Qualified applicants must demonstrate the need for more suitable housing, the ability to make affordable mortgage payments and a commitment to contribute volunteer hours with Habitat.
Eligible families living in the Niagara region who meet the program’s minimum requirements are encouraged to apply. The current minimum gross household income for applicants is $65,000.
“Our application process is now open as we search for local families to become homeowners for these six new townhouses in Welland,” said Carl. “Together, we can change lives— because a resilient neighbourhood starts with a home.”
Selected homebuyers will purchase the home through an affordable mortgage, with monthly payments of approximately 30% of their gross household income. In addition, each family will contribute 500 volunteer hours with Habitat Niagara building their homes, supporting operations at Niagara ReStores and participating in homeownership workshops designed to prepare them for success.
Habitat Niagara recently revised its application process as applications are only open on a project-by-project basis once all necessary approvals have been received to begin construction. The non-profit also updated the process to make it easier for families to see if they qualify.
How to apply
Visit habitatniagara.ca/become-a-homeowner to first complete the Eligibility Questionnaire. Successful applicants will be invited to attend an information session, to learn about Habitat Niagara, the Affordable Homeownership Program and mortgage model. After attending the information session, applicants who believe they meet all the criteria can submit a full application.

Build days offer a unique opportunity for corporate and community groups to roll up their sleeves and make a lasting impact.
