ST. CATHARINES, ON — A generous donation of more than $253,000 from Barry and Linda Coutts is set to transform a recently purchased property into a safe, affordable home for a local family.
The Coutts’ donation will help fund the renovation of a single-family home on Junkin Street in St. Catharines and create a safe, affordable homeownership opportunity for a local family. The City of St. Catharines acquired the three-bedroom, two-bathroom detached home through a failed tax sale. Recognizing the opportunity to revitalize the home, the City sold the property to Habitat Niagara.
The Coutts’ contribution, as title sponsor, reflects their deep commitment to helping others build stronger futures through affordable homeownership.
“Barry and Linda’s extraordinary support will have generational impact on a local family,” said Sarah Pritula, philanthropy and major gifts director with Habitat Niagara. “Their belief in the power of affordable homeownership set an inspiring example, demonstrating how thoughtful philanthropy can spark meaningful, lasting change across the community.”
For the Coutts’, the decision to support Habitat for Humanity Niagara was rooted in a believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to improve their quality of life.
“We believe in giving and wanted to do something worthwhile that would truly make a difference for people,” said Linda Coutts. “Habitat for Humanity’s model really resonated with us because it empowers people to help themselves, improve their lives and create a better future with dignity. Homeownership brings stability, pride and a sense of belonging in a community. We’ve been fortunate, and it’s important to us to help provide that same opportunity for another family.”
Barry Coutts said the growing housing crisis inspired the couple to look for a meaningful way to make an impact.
“We wanted to find a way to help address the housing challenges many families are facing today,” said Barry Coutts. “Habitat for Humanity Niagara has a proven track record of helping hardworking families achieve homeownership, and we knew this gift could make a real difference. Being able to give back is an incredible feeling and knowing that a deserving family will have a safe, stable place to call home makes it even more meaningful.”
The Coutts’ believe homeownership creates far-reaching benefits that will extend well beyond the walls of a house. They point to the stability it provides families, opportunities for children to thrive, and the stronger connections it fosters within neighbourhoods.

The couple also hopes their gift inspires others to support Habitat Niagara, whether through financial contributions or volunteerism.

The completion of this home will stand as a testament to the power of generosity, led by Barry and Linda Coutts, and the collective commitment to building a stronger, more resilient community.
Habitat Niagara is currently undertaking a full renovation of the home, and once complete, the home will be sold to a local family through Habitat Niagara’s Affordable Homeownership Program. The program provides families with a path to homeownership through an affordable mortgage, combined with a commitment to partnership, requiring 500 hours of volunteer service.
Habitat Niagara is inviting the community to join the effort. A total of 15 Habitat Build Days will be offered, giving individuals, organizations, and corporate teams the chance to actively contribute to the home’s transformation. Additional support through in-kind donations and financial contributions is also welcome.
