Become a Habitat homeowner

Every day, more families struggle to keep a decent roof over their heads. Rising rents, unsafe or overcrowded living conditions, and a lack of affordable housing are putting homeownership out of reach for many.

At Habitat for Humanity Niagara, we’re changing that. With the support of volunteers and generous donors, we build opportunities – because healthy communities start with a home.

Watch the video to learn about the basic eligibility requirements for Habitat homebuyers.

What you can expect from Habitat homeownership

  • Affordable financing: There is no down payment, and your mortgage payments will be at approximately 30% of your gross household income.
  • Annual income review: Your income is reviewed with us each year to ensure payments remain affordable, helping to safeguard your financial stability.
  • Community contribution: Volunteer hours (500) with Habitat Niagara include helping to build homes, supporting our ReStores and participating in homeowner education classes that cover budgeting, home maintenance and more.
  • Must be your main home: The Habitat home must be where you live, not a vacation home or rental property.
  • Right to buy back: Habitat has the the option to buy the home back from you if you decide to sell it. This keeps the home within Habitat’s supply for future partnerships with other families seeking affordable homeownership. A formula decides how any increase or decrease in the home’s value is shared.
