Home #50 - Welland Niagara College and Community Build (2015 - 2016)

H H Fam 1a (3)

As part of Habitat’s Youth Building Program, in partnership with the Niagara College Construction Techniques program, over 70 students constructed this home over the entire school year. The students learned highly sought after skills in today’s job market and have the satisfaction of helping build a home – and hope – for people living right in their own community.

The family that calls this house a home is José and Claudia Palma and their three children. José and Claudia were community advocates in their home country of El Salvador, helping to create a future for young people that did not involve violence. When gang violence threatened their family, they, along with their son, José, and Claudia’s mother, Antonia, were forced to flee their home, family, friends and start over in a new country.

In Canada they found protection, safety, and hope for a better future for their family. As they work towards planning their new future in Canada, their family has grown. Their son José is now big brother to Sammuel and Isabella. Claudia is working through the educational requirements to allow her to practice dentistry in Canada while José is enrolled in an apprenticeship program for Auto Services Technician at Niagara College. This house represents the end of a long journey that started when the Palmas left El Salvador, but now they have the opportunity to rewrite their story in a new place called home.
