Since August, over 170 women (and some men too!) have been on 14 team build days constructing two homes for Habitat Niagara’s Women Build in Niagara Falls for two local families in need of decent and safe places to call home.

By mid-December, 66 teams will have participated in building these homes from the ground up including framing, installing trim, flooring, and insulation, building decks and painting walls. One of the two-unit semi-detached homes is for Amy and Michael and their five children and the second is for Mohammad and Latifa who have four children. Mohammad and Latifa’s home will be accessible for their son who requires a wheelchair.

The homes will be completed in late autumn and the Home Dedication Ceremony is scheduled for December 15th, just in time for the families to move into their new homes and be settled in for the holidays.

In addition to building these homes, the participants raise funds to help purchase the building materials to construct these homes, with a lofty goal of $300,000.  Participants are also raising awareness about inadequate housing across Niagara and the need for families to have decent places to live.

Here are some comments on what participants have said about their Habitat Build Day:

It was an incredible feeling being able to help a deserving family have a home!  It's also wonderful being able to learn a new skill.  – Sarah G.

It was such an enriching experience!  I went to give of myself but I left more fulfilled from the work I did, the things I learned, the time spent with friends, the compassion I gained from working along side the new home owners. – Melanie D.

I thought that it was a wonderful day, and so nice to see communities and businesses come together to help not one, but two families. It was a very humbling experience for me- thank you. - DC

It was truly amazing to see - I have never participated in something so powerful. – Danielle S.
