Local Businesses Support Habitat Build - Fort Erie

14 Mar

FORT ERIE, ON – With the land on Crescent Road already donated there have been a number of organizations who have committed funds toward building a Habitat house for a hardworking, low-income Niagara family.

Many organizations have sponsored Adopt a Days, where six to eight people on their team work on the build site for the day doing tasks to build the house. The funds raised from Adopt a Days go toward the purchase of construction materials needed to build the house – it is a unique combination of volunteer hours and financial contributions that double the team’s impact. Included in an Adopt a Day is lunch for all of the volunteers, and all lunches will be generously donated by the local McDonald’s, owned by Peter Patterson.

Thirty of these days are scheduled for the Fort Erie build and fifteen have already been taken by local organizations and community groups including: Canadian Niagara Power, Circle P Paving, Clarion Hotel & Conference Centre, Community Living Fort Erie, Fort Erie Chamber of Commerce, Fort Erie Economic Development & Tourism Corporation, Fort Erie Live Racing Consortium, Jennifer Biscaro, Financial Advisor - the co-operators, Rich Products Fort Erie,  Royal Le Page,  TD Canada Trust Fort Erie and the Town of Fort Erie.

The Clarion Hotel & Conference Centre began their fundraising efforts to sponsor two Adopt a Days for their teams. Lidia Heidelberger, Guest Service Manager, has taken the lead on this initiative. “We started off by collecting donation money in the Habitat house banks, which staff, management and the hotel all have been doing since January,” explains Lidia. “We will also be hosting fundraiser events throughout the year to help us achieve our goal.”

One community member, Roger Jones, who helps to raise funds for community initiatives, took home a house bank and filled it right away and is now using a big jar to collect donations. “Everyone should do their part so it’s not such a hardship on the few people that care and wish to help,” said Roger.

One of the fundraiser events the Clarion is holding is an indoor winter yard sale, breakfast and barbeque this Saturday, March 19th with proceeds to Habitat Niagara. The event takes place in the Gateway ball room from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm and everyone is welcome. (Individuals wishing to drop off item donations to help support the event are asked to do at the hotel by March 17th.)
