Habitat for Humanity hosts second Women Build Framing Blitz
Habitat for Humanity Niagara’s Women Build Framing Blitz day kicked off Monday, August 21st, where close to 60 participants from Realty Executives and John Deere Canada along with professional framers (Milestone Construction, Taerjo-Ariel, John Frose Construction and Dave Wiens Construction) constructed two homes for two local families.
Habitat Niagara's Women Build will see about 300 women from across the region come together to build a two-unit, semi-detached home for two families in Niagara Falls from August to December. These two houses will become homes for two local families, one with five children living in overcrowded, unsafe conditions, while the second will be an accessible home for a family with four children, one of whom requires a wheelchair.
“Everyone here is really excited to be able to support the build for these families,” said Alastair Davis, Habitat Niagara CEO. “We have been overwhelmed by the support of the women across our community who have stepped up to help fund and build these homes.”
Each participant is asked to collect pledge money to donate toward building costs and the women are given all the required training while on the build site.
“The experience of working with the framers was amazing,” explains Aneta Fleming, realtor with Realty Executives. “They go like gangbusters and are really good at teaching the volunteers. I have great respect for these guys. This has been such a great experience for our team!”
“It was like a modern day barn-raising,” said Sarah Matthews of John Deere Canada. “These framers have gone non-stop since early morning. It’s such an incredible thing to witness with all of the logistics involved. I had no idea the windows, doors and roof would be installed – it’s a huge feat!”
Both future homeowners were onsite helping to build their homes.
“It’s like a dream. I close my eyes and in one-day there is a house,” said future Habitat homeowner Mohammad. “I called my wife and children on Viper and live videoed the house being built. It would not have been possible for us to buy a house, it feels like we’ve won the lottery thanks to Habitat.”
“We are overwhelmed, this is incredible,” said Amy. “No amount of words seeing the amount of work these people have put into building our home.”
A Home Dedication Ceremony is scheduled for mid-December to celebrate the completed construction and the families will move into their new homes just before the holidays.
